Canopus is the second brightest star in the night sky and used to be the brightest 3 times in earth's history and will be the brightest again for the fourth time. The stars declination is so far south it can't be seen from San Francisco so ha ha Silicon Valley.
History and Future
Right now is the best time to see Canopus as it is in it's prime time to see it. In AD 15,000. Canopus will be invisible even to latitudes of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and Hanoi Vietnam and would actually be best seen in June. Canopus would be Circumpolar even as north as Darwin, Australia, or Poker, New Zealand.
Due to Proper Motion, Canopus is moving North at a period of around 2 degrees every 100,000 years and in around 2.5 million years, Canopus may begin to become a northern star again like it was some 4.5 million years ago.
